Dr. Utkal is an electronics engineering, a senior IEEE professional member, and secretary IEEE Fiji Subsection.

He has over 19 years’ experience in both academics and research in various educational institutes and industries. Received the Ph.D. degree from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-G), in Electronics and Electrical Engineering. 

He worked as the Project Engineer in R&D for a multinational US-based company.

His skills are with analog circuit design, reprogrammable processors in automation and robotics.

Currently, he is doing research in areas with fractional calculus applications for system modeling, identification techniques in time and frequency domain, fractional order control and various robotics applications for medical and industrial automation.

2019 Faculty prize for excellence in Teaching

Winner in iHack Challenge Idea Competition on 20th March 2019, with the title of the project "Deep Learning for Marine Research and Exploration" and received award money total $2000.

2017 Vice-Chancellor’s Prize for Innovation award

Supervised students won the trophy with 1st position in the ANZ Pacific-Innovation-Challenge 2017, with the theme ‘Pacific flavored hackathon’ between the local rival universities.

Awarded Academic Staff mobility under ERASMUS+ KA107-24005 – ICM – the University of Valladolid for 2017.

Secured F$13,000 grant from SP funding as PI for the FSTE Braille Eye Slate project 2017.
